Daily writing prompt
Think back on your most memorable road trip.

Some memories don’t come back as full stories. Road trip memories often return as snapshots—sounds, smells, small moments that still feel alive years later.

When I think back to my most memorable road trips, that’s how they come to me. Road trip memories have a way of sticking with you.

A Mercury Van, a Car Bra, and the Wisconsin Dells

I remember being a kid and taking a road trip to Wisconsin Dells. I can still picture myself sitting in the back of my parents’ Mercury van—the one with that oversized bra stretched across the front.

Even back then, I thought car bras were lame. When my parents finally took it off, there was a perfect tan line left behind between the paint covered with the bra and the paint left out in the sun.

On that same trip, I was entertaining myself with a Capri Sun, holding it out the window just to hear it flap wildly in the wind. At some point, I let go. It flew straight back behind the van, gone in an instant.

My dad was furious—mostly because I had littered.
I learned a lesson that day, even if I didn’t fully understand it at the time.

Teen Years, Cabins, and a PlayStation in the Woods

Another road trip that stands out was one I took with my best friends at the time, Adam Caddo and Jason McNeal. We drove to a cabin to go camping for a week—pretty sure it was in Michigan.

There was a pool at the campground, which made it even better. We were teenagers with no real responsibilities, riding around in a boat, trying to catch fish, and smoking weed. Jason even brought his PlayStation 1 with the little fold-up screen so we could play games while camping—even though we barely touched it. Those road trip memories are quite vivid for me. I watched the movie EuroTrip for the first time and I remember laughing a lot.

What always makes me laugh looking back is the sleeping arrangement. I got the couch, and those two slept in the same bed. It was all in good fun, and it’s one of those details that somehow sticks the longest.

A 14-Hour Drive to Texas

Then there was the road trip to Texas for a wedding. It took about 14 hours, and my girlfriend’s brother at the time drove the entire way in his van. It became one of my cherished road trip memories.

He genuinely loved driving—something I still don’t fully understand—but it worked out for the rest of us. That trip felt endless while it was happening, but now it’s just another chapter filed away in memory.

Florida, In-Laws, and Too Many Rest Stops

Another trip that stays with me was a road trip to Florida with my in-laws at the time. I actually got along with them really well and spent a lot of time with them back then. I still miss them sometimes, and these road trip memories linger on.

The only thing that drove me crazy?
They stopped at every single rest stop to pee. Every one. No exceptions.

It annoyed me then—but now it’s just another funny detail that makes the memory feel real.

Why These Memories Matter

None of these road trips were perfect.
None of them were life-changing in the moment. However, the road trip memories make them significant.

But together, they tell a story of who I was at different stages of life—and how small moments quietly shape us.

That’s something I’ve come to appreciate more with time.

Capturing the Moments That Make Us Who We Are

Memories like these are exactly why I built ThoughtsBeCaught.

The app isn’t about writing perfect stories or having deep insights every day. It’s about capturing the small thoughts, memories, and reflections that would otherwise slip by unnoticed—just like a Capri Sun disappearing out the back window of a van.

One thought a day is enough.
Over time, those thoughts turn into patterns, growth, and understanding.

If you have a memory that keeps resurfacing—no matter how random or small—ThoughtsBeCaught gives you a place to catch it before it fades.
