Some family traditions are polished and picture-perfect. However, others are a little strange, slightly chaotic, and somehow even better because of it. For me, the family traditions I love most fall into that second category — the ones that bring everyone together, spark laughter, and create memories you can’t plan. There’s something truly special about the family traditions that shape our lives.
The Pickle Ornament Tradition
One of my favorite holiday traditions is the pickle ornament game. Every Christmas, someone hides a pickle ornament somewhere on the tree. Then, whichever kid finds it first gets to open the pickle gift — which is usually a board game or something fun that everyone gets to play together. You could say this is one of those quirky traditions families adopt and make their own.
That’s why this tradition works so well. It isn’t about one person winning a prize; instead, it’s about starting the holiday with shared laughter, friendly competition, and time together. Although the pickle might be small, the tradition always brings the whole room to life, connecting everyone through unique family traditions.
The Year-Round Christmas Tree (Yes, Really)
Another tradition that always makes me smile comes from my woman’s mom. Rather than packing the tree away, she keeps a Christmas tree up all year long — and no, it doesn’t get forgotten or ignored. Instead, she redecorates the tree for every upcoming holiday. This has become one of those family traditions that never loses its charm.
Valentine’s Day? Decorations.
Easter? Decorations.
Halloween? Decorations.
Random Tuesday? Somehow, decorations.
No matter the season, she always finds something to put on that tree. One year, my dog even peed on it — oops. At the time, I couldn’t help but laugh. Thankfully, the tree survived, and the tradition continued like nothing ever happened. Amazingly, these holiday moments add another chapter to our family traditions.
The Next Generation Takes It Further
Over time, her daughter has started carrying on the tradition — but with her own twist. Her tree sits upside down and comes in black, completely ditching the classic green-and-red Christmas look. In doing so, she adds a modern flavor to the family traditions passed from one generation to the next.
As a result, the tree feels bold, creative, and entirely her style.
That’s what makes traditions like these special: they evolve. They don’t need to stay the same forever. Instead, they just need to keep bringing people joy as a part of ongoing family traditions.
Why These Traditions Matter
None of these traditions are fancy. There’s no strict rulebook, and no one worries about perfect setups. Yet, they create moments — laughter around a game, jokes about a dog mishap, and conversations sparked by a strange black upside-down tree. These are the sort of experiences that become the foundation of lasting family traditions.
Ultimately, those are the moments that stick with you.
In everyday life, it’s easy to overlook memories like these. However, they quietly shape how we feel about family, belonging, and home. They’re small, happy thoughts that deserve to be noticed — and remembered as part of cherished family traditions.
That’s exactly where ThoughtsBeCaught comes in.
The app gives you a simple, private place to log moments like these as they happen — the joy, the humor, and the warmth of shared traditions. Over time, those entries become gentle reminders of what makes life feel meaningful, especially on harder days when it’s easy to forget. In other words, your family traditions are captured and saved for the future.
In the end, traditions don’t need to be perfect to be meaningful. They just need to be shared — and sometimes, gently caught before they fade.
