Doing Less of What Hurts: Letting Go of Other People’s Choices Establishing emotional boundaries can help you focus on your own life and reduce the impact of others’ decisions on your well-being. Emotional boundaries ensure that you take responsibility for your feelings and actions, not those of others.
Carrying More Than I Should
If I’m being real with myself, I think I could do less carrying the weight of other people’s choices.

Lately I’ve found myself in situations where trust gets chipped away — not in big dramatic ways, but in small, draining ones. Things like someone quietly swapping my good charging cable with a broken one… or taking my car without asking, even though I might have needed it. It’s the pattern that wears on you — the feeling of being reliable for everyone else while not getting that same reliability in return.
Trust, Doubt, and the Weight of Responsibility
I’ve spent a lot of my life giving people the benefit of the doubt, especially the people I care about. I want to believe they’ll do the right thing, that trust is mutual, that respect goes both ways.
But when actions don’t match words, it forces you to look inward and ask:
How much of this emotional responsibility am I taking on that isn’t mine?
When Words and Actions Don’t Match
What makes it even harder is when the same people crossing those boundaries are also the ones saying how much they love me, how much they need me, how important I am to them.
That emotional whiplash — warm words paired with disrespectful actions — leaves me confused, guilty, and second-guessing myself.
The Awkwardness of Confronting the Truth
Then it all turns into this weird situation, because now I have to confront it instead of pretending I didn’t notice. And honestly, that’s the part I hate most.
It shouldn’t put me in a position where I feel dumb or disrespected just for acknowledging what happened.
I shouldn’t have to act like I’m oblivious to keep the peace.
What I Could Do Less Of
So maybe what I could do less of is absorbing the inconsistency.
Less internalizing mixed messages.
Less carrying the emotional load for actions I didn’t choose.
What I Deserve
I deserve to feel respected.
I deserve honesty.
I deserve relationships where I don’t have to question whether someone is taking advantage of my kindness.
ThoughtsBeCaught Reflection
Today I logged this thought because writing about it helps me process the situation instead of holding it in.
My coping strategy was blogging — giving the thought a place to land so it doesn’t keep spinning in my head.
Seeing it in words makes me feel clearer, calmer, and more grounded. It reminds me that reflection is strength… not weakness.
