What do you complain about the most?

There are many things I could complain about. However, if I’m being honest, the hardest part is starting — and continuing — your own app company. For anyone considering starting an app company, the journey is filled with unique challenges and rewards.

Not because the idea isn’t good or the technology isn’t exciting, but because the grind never really stops.

The Constant Grind of Building an App

Building an app means wearing every hat. Some days you’re deep in code; other days you’re designing UI or tweaking UX because something feels off, much like the reality of starting an app company from scratch.

You’re constantly building, testing, breaking, fixing, and repeating. There’s no real finish line — just the next iteration. Most of this work also happens quietly, with very little external validation.

User Experience Is Never Finished

A functional app isn’t enough. Users expect clean design, smooth flows, and clarity. As a result, you’re always asking what can be simplified, why users drop off, and how the experience can improve; such questions are familiar if you are starting an app company today.

UX and UI evolve constantly, and every improvement takes time and patience.

Marketing, Trade Shows, and Rejection

Getting the word out feels overwhelming. Ads burn through money, strategies rarely work as expected, and even local outreach takes time before showing results. Anyone who has ever started an app company will recognize these hurdles.

Trade shows push you outside your comfort zone, forcing you to pitch your idea face-to-face. It takes confidence — especially when growth is slow.

Meanwhile, investor and grant rejections hit hard. Hearing “not a fit” over and over challenges your motivation, even when you still believe in the idea.

Learning, Ideas, and Slow Growth

The learning never stops. You study successful companies, work with freelancers for outside perspectives, and constantly generate new ideas to retain users and grow. For those starting an app company, this ongoing education is essential.

Growth itself is slow. You celebrate small wins — one new user, one subscriber, one person who stays. Retention matters more than downloads, and profitability takes time.

At the core of it all, the hardest part isn’t building the app. Instead, starting an app company truly tests your long-term motivation.

It’s staying motivated.
