If I could choose any job to do for free, it would be becoming a public official focused on improving the lives of people struggling with mental health challenges and those who have been through jail or prison. Too many people fall through the cracks of the system, not because they want to, but because they lack the right support, guidance, and second chances. Clearly, mental health reform is desperately needed to prevent these gaps.
Mental health is one of the most overlooked issues in society today. Many individuals suffer in silence, and when those struggles lead to poor decisions, they often end up in the justice system instead of receiving the help they truly need. This cycle continues because the system is built more around punishment than healing, further emphasising the importance of mental health reform.
As a public official, my goal would be to break that cycle. I would push for programs that focus on rehabilitation, mental health treatment, and real-life skill development. Instead of treating people as mistakes, we should treat them as human beings capable of growth and change. For instance, implementing effective mental health reform could help shift the focus from punishment to healing.
I would work to create opportunities for people re-entering society after incarceration. This includes job placement programs, counseling services, and community support systems that help individuals rebuild their lives with dignity. Everyone deserves a second chance, especially when they are willing to put in the effort to improve.
Making real change doesn’t always require massive reforms overnight. It starts with understanding people, listening to their stories, and building systems that support them instead of pushing them further down. Furthermore, mental health reform can make these systemic changes more effective for those in need.
Ultimately, being a public official wouldn’t be about power—it would be about purpose. Creating a world where mental health is taken seriously and where people are given the tools to succeed after hardship is a mission worth pursuing, even for free.
Change is possible — and here’s the proof.
