At first, I didn’t even want ducks, and raising ducks was the farthest thing from my mind.

In the past I had pet ducks and they were messy, loud, and more work than they were worth. But after giving them a second shot, I can honestly say I’ve completely changed my mind. Watching ducks play in water is surprisingly calming. There’s something about how they splash around, clean themselves, and interact that makes it enjoyable to just sit back and observe. In fact, raising ducks has shown me new sides of their personalities.

One of my ducks has grown to over 10 pounds, which is impressive. Raising ducks has turned into more than just a hobby—it’s becoming a practical food source too. Duck meat is honestly some of the best I’ve had. It’s rich, flavorful, and makes the effort feel worth it.

That said, I’m also interested in egg production. If one of my ducks turns out to be a good layer, I may keep it longer. Otherwise, I do plan on using some of them for meat. It’s all part of learning and building something sustainable. Raising ducks allows for both fresh eggs and tasty duck meat.

I’ve recently added more ducklings to the mix—this time focusing on meat breeds along with one egg-laying duck. The goal is to hopefully get a mix of females for eggs and strong males for meat production. Eventually, I’d like to let them breed and raise ducklings naturally.

Another funny thing I’ve noticed—they love cat food. I give it to them as a treat, and they go crazy for it.

Overall, this has turned into a fun and rewarding project. What started as hesitation has turned into something I genuinely enjoy. Raising ducks might be messy, but they bring a lot more value than I expected.
