Daily writing prompt
What’s something you used to believe as a kid that seems ridiculous now?

When I was about eight years old, I watched the movie Tremors for the very first time. If you’ve never seen it, the movie is about giant worm-like creatures that live underground. They hunt people by sensing vibrations and footsteps on the ground. For many kids, a movie like this can spark lifelong childhood fears.

As a kid, this movie absolutely terrified me. That’s a classic example of how childhood fears often begin.

After watching it, I became afraid to walk on soil or grass. I honestly believed that if I stepped on the ground, one of those giant worms might burst out of the earth and eat me. Concrete felt safe, but dirt and fields suddenly seemed dangerous.

The movie scared me so much that I even had nightmares about it, a common result of childhood fears.

Looking back now, it’s funny to think about. I’ve watched the entire Tremors series as an adult, and none of the movies scare me anymore. In fact, I actually enjoy them.

Kids experience scary movies differently than adults. When you’re young, your imagination can take a story to a completely different level. What adults see as entertainment can feel very real to a child. For many, childhood fears linger long after the movie ends.

It seems silly now, but childhood fears are powerful. Sometimes all it takes is one scary movie to make an eight-year-old question whether it’s safe to walk across the backyard.

Final Thoughts

As children, we often believe things that seem ridiculous as adults. But those fears and experiences are part of growing up—and they usually make for some pretty funny stories later in life.
