The Best Local Dish I’ve Had While Traveling: McGuire’s in Destin
There was a time when I traveled to Destin, Florida pretty regularly with an old girlfriend and her family. One of the highlights of those trips was visiting McGuire’s Irish Pub Destin. Her parents had a condo down there, so we would spend our days exploring Destin, going on little adventures, checking out different places, and enjoying everything the area had to offer.
One place we would sometimes end up was McGuire’s Irish Pub in Destin. The food was always good, but the atmosphere is what really made the place stick in my memory. Nothing else around Destin is quite like the iconic experience you get at McGuire’s Irish Pub Destin. McGuire’s is famous for the enormous number of signed dollar bills covering the walls and ceiling. Walking inside and looking up at all that money is something you don’t forget.
When I think about the best local food I’ve had while traveling, I don’t necessarily remember just one particular dish. I remember the whole experience surrounding it. We’d spend the day out doing something in Destin, get hungry, and sometimes wind up at McGuire’s for a meal—often thinking about how uniquely welcoming McGuire’s Irish Pub Destin always felt.
Those trips were a long time ago, and life has changed a lot since then, but they’re still good memories. Sometimes a restaurant becomes memorable not only because of what you ate, but because of where you were, what you were doing, and who you were sharing that part of your life with. For instance, McGuire’s Irish Pub Destin is forever tied to those moments for me.
For me, McGuire’s will always be one of those places that stands out, and McGuire’s Irish Pub Destin brings back memories every time I hear the name.
